A few members of the team participated in an outreach event at Adventure in Science at Leidos Gaithersburg. We held a presentation for around 20 young children who had shown prior interest in robotics and engineering. We began the presentation by telling them about the formation of the team and how we reached where we are today. Many of the children present had some experience with robotics whether it be with EV3 Legos, First Robotics, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi .We introduced them to our robot and its abilities, as well as the VEX Turning Point 2018-2019 game. We thoroughly explained how the game works: how teams are formed, how points are scored, general rules of the game, etc. Additionally, we answered any questions the kids had about or robot or the game. After explaining the general formalities of the game, we answered any questions the kids had and allowed them to take turns driving the robot. To do this, we taught them the basic joystick controls that activated the chassis, ball intake, ball shooter, and cap flipper. To conclude the presentation, we discussed our design award and explained the importance of documenting the engineering process. We also answered any questions that parents had regarding the formation of a robotics team and involvement in robotics.
Below is the video we showed the kids to introduce them to the game:
